Podcast Pitch

3 Min Read  •  Media Arts Strategy

Think about the last time a podcast grabbed you in the first 30 seconds and you knew you weren’t going anywhere until it was over.

That opening did something specific. It asked a great question or dropped you into the middle of a story, or made you feel like the host was talking directly to you. It was crafted.

This week’s strategy, Podcast Pitch, asks students to craft that moment for their own content. They have 60 to 90 seconds to hook a general audience on something they’ve been learning. No reading from notes… just their voice, intention, and genuine understanding.

Bonus: you’ll never meet a more motivated writer than a student who knows their words are going to be heard out loud.

Step 1: Listen First

Play 2 to 3 short podcast openings (60 to 90 seconds each) from shows your students might know. Ask:

  • What did the host do in the very first sentence?
  • What made you want to keep listening?
  • How is this different from how a textbook would start?

Step 2: Choose the Concept

Students select a concept, event, person, or process from their current learning that they will pitch to a general audience, someone who knows absolutely nothing about the topic.

Step 3: Write the Script

Students write a 60 to 90 second script using four structural elements:

  • The Hook: a question, a surprising fact, or a moment that pulls the listener in immediately
  • The Context: one or two sentences that give the audience just enough background
  • The Angle: the most interesting, surprising, or important thing about this topic
  • The Close: one sentence that leaves the listener wanting more

Step 4: Record and Share

Students record their pitch using a phone, tablet, or any recording tool available. Share as a class playlist, in small groups, or as part of a unit review.

Discussion prompts:

  • Which hook made you want to hear the full episode?
  • What did you learn from hearing someone else’s angle on the same content?
  • What would you change about your own pitch after listening to others?
