About this Course

STEAM education is one of the most talked-about approaches for 21st century learners. But what does it really look like? Here’s a hint: marshmallow challenges and shadow boxes aren’t it. And it’s not just adding a cute art project to a STEM lesson.

STEAM is an incredibly effective approach, IF you know how and when to use it.

This online course will help you build an authentic STEAM teaching approach. This moves beyond simply using the design-process to truly being able to integrate all the arts in and through STEM. You’ll discover how, when and where to use STEAM effectively. You’ll also receive templates, resources and planning documents that will save you hours of time.

Inside this accredited STEAM professional development designed specifically for teachers, you’ll learn a research-based STEAM process and be able to customize it to your content and teaching style. You can start or complete this course at any time – membership access is included.

Module 1: STEAM Lesson & Assessment Design

3 Lessons:

  • Identify the basics of the STEAM approach
  • Identify standards alignments and create a STEAM lesson
  • Differentiate the different ways to assess a STEAM lesson

3 Activities:

  • Use the STEAM look for list to observe STEAM lessons
  • Review lesson exemplars and complete the lesson planner
  •  Review the resource guide and assessment samples

1 Assignment:

5-question check-in quiz

3 Lessons:

  • Define and create a curriculum mapping process for STEAM lessons
  • Determine the structural supports needed for STEAM to occur
  • Explore how the design process is used within a STEAM lesson or project

3 Activities:

  • Complete the STEAM Roadmapping sheet
  • Complete the STEAM Structures Checklist
  •  Review the Design Cheatsheet

1 Assignment:

5-question check-in quiz

3 Lessons:

  • Outline how to find time for integrating with STEAM in your curriculum
  • Identify the challenges and barriers to STEAM in your organization
  •  Design a STEAM implementation plan aligned with SMART goals

3 Activities:

  • Complete the STEAM planner to begin planning your STEAM lesson or project
  • Complete the STEAM task list
  • Use the implementation guidebook to craft a STEAM plan

1 Assignment:

3 Lessons:

  • Determine ways to ask for review feedback
  • Develop partnerships and model STEAM shifts
  • Determine ways that STEAM can connect with other initiatives

3 Activities:

  • Review feedback forms and modify to fit individual situations
  • Review the partnership Packet and email scripts. Determine potential partners.
  •  Choose an idea from the Connections Sheet to use with staff/team

1 Final Assignment:

Using the STEAM lesson planner and the STEAM lesson template, develop an original STEAM lesson plan that aligns a content standard with an arts standard from a grade level of your choosing.

Course Outcomes

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

    • Define the distinct elements of STEM, STEAM, and Integrated studies, including the differences and similarities of each strategy.
    • Select objectives from Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Math that are aligned and enhance each other to increase student engagement in learning.
    • Build a series of authentic STEAM lessons that are grade-level appropriate and rigorous in the individual cognitive demand required for students.
    • Develop a set of curriculum schema maps that outline a variety of paths students could explore through STEM and STEAM lessons.
    • Design multiple assessment examples that measure student mastery of content equitably in each content objective addressed in a STEAM lesson.
    • Create data facilitation resources which engage teachers and students in reflections of a STEAM lesson experience and outline next steps for student growth.
    • Cite the principles of design and provide examples for ways in which they can be used as a framework for STEAM lesson.

Why can’t I take this course without enrolling in the Accelerator?

Because this saves you money. Our individual courses cost the same amount as an Accelerator membership. It just didn’t make sense to keep offering these course a la carte when you could have better support and resources in the Accelerator. If you complete your course and don’t wish to continue your membership, you can always cancel at anytime.

Will the PD hours count for my school/district?

In most cases, yes! We can provide you with a certificate of hours from our organization, based on the contact hours of the course. The majority of schools and districts accept these certificates and count them towards professional development hours.  We always advise you, however, to check with your own institution before taking a course – just to be sure!

None of these courses are offered with graduate credit or are affiliated with an institution of higher education.  However, we do work directly with state departments of education to ensure that these professional development hours meet their requirements and high-levels of learning expectations.  As such, in almost all cases, these courses can be used for continuing education requirements.

Can I use a purchase order? What if I have a group?

School districts MAY use a purchase order – please contact us for more details and let us know which course you are interested in.

How long can I access the course?

This course is self-paced, meaning you can go as quickly or as slowly as you need. We know that while you may have specific intentions for how you’ll go through your course, life can sometimes have other plans. That’s why you can take any course at any time.  You’ll never have to worry about falling behind or getting registered for credit in time.  Work at your own pace in your own way.
