Studio STEAM-up Series! STEAM education and Dance

Next week will begin my Studio STEAM-up series.

This series will look at each of the STEAM disciplines, and offer creative ways to integrate them with dance. The focus will be the secondary national and common core standards for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics in partnership with the national standards for Dance. In addition to, keeping in mind that true integration involves linking the standards and assessments for each of the disciplines. Furthermore, we will look at lesson seeds, full lesson plans, assessments, and rubrics that connect dance with each of the STEAM subjects.  Each installment will have multiple resources, and ready to use capacities for STEAM-ing up the dance studio. Additionally, bringing the dance studio to your STEAM education discipline.

Additionally, if you know you are teaching something in the upcoming year, and would like to compose a means for integrating it with dance please reply below or comment on our facebook with the concept, theme, and/or standard that you wish to integrate and together we can find a great way to bring the dance studio to your content!

Studio STEAM-up Series Preview

July 27: Science and Dance

Offers lesson seeds on anatomy, kinesiology, biology, and earth science as inspiration for movement and retention for science content.

August 3: Technology and Dance

Employs the use of technology as a way to strengthen technical skills and build technology savvy students ready to market themselves through digital portfolios.

August 10: Engineering and Dance

Combine the design elements in engineering with the composition elements of choreography.

August 17: Arts and Dance

Applies collaboration between all of the arts to build comprehensive arts lessons including a way to involve the community through student produced events.

August 24: Mathematics and Dance

Use dance as a way to understand our favorite algebraic equations and geometric patterns.

About the Author

Dr. Typhani Harris, author of Putting the Performance in Performance Task and Stop Teaching, brings over 2 decades of educational experience to The Institute. Originally a high school English Language Arts teacher, Dr. Harris transitioned into a dance educator who cultivated an award-winning collegiate style dance education program at a public school in California. Prior to joining the Institute, she was an educational leader and instructional coach specializing in preparing new teachers in secondary urban schools.  As the Executive Director of Academic Affairs, Dr. Harris maintains courses, conferences, and the accredited certification program at The Institute.
