About this Course

How many times have you felt like testing has overtaken your classroom? It doesn’t need to be this way! Authentic assessment can be a natural part of the learning cycle, and can be done without killing creativity.

This assessment course will give you a complete toolkit for looking at student growth through the process of checking for understanding.

Inside this online course, you’ll explore the types of assessment and learn which ones to use for your lessons and projects. You’ll also discover examples for a variety of assessment models, including diagnostic, formative and summative measures. You’ll be provided with hundreds of ways to check for understanding, as well as a body of research to support this assessment method in your classroom.

And, you can use the samples and templates provided to create your own assessments that work within your current curriculum. You can start or complete this course at any time – membership access is included.

Module 1: Purpose and Types of Assessment

3 Lessons:

  • Identify the difference between assessment and evaluation
  • Distinguish between the three types of assessments and when to use them
  • Determine how to assess two contents and the role of rubrics

3 Activities:

  • Use the Assessment Reflection sheet to consider your own practice
  • Plan out your assessments with the assessment tool
  • Create and assessment plan using the Assessment Mixing Guide

1 Assignment:

  • Determine what makes an authentic assessment
  • Identify the five steps to creating an authentic assessment
  • Build an assessment profile with alternative assessments

3 Activities:

  • Create an authentic assessment action plan
  • Use the Assessment Cheat Sheet to work through your assessment design
  • Review the five different assessment guides

1 Assignment:

1 Assignment:

  • Calculate how to use data analysis to adjust lessons and units

1 Final Assignment:

Using the Authentic Assessment Action Plan and the Create an Assessment Cheat Sheet provided, develop an original diagnostic, and 2 original formative assessments that can be developed for a lesson plan.

    • Create a comprehensive menu of assessment choices specifically for arts classrooms and arts integration lessons
    • Analyze data gathered from assessments to determine appropriate next steps for student instruction
    • Present data from assessments to administrators using digital resources and tools
    • Cite specific assessment examples that can be used authentically to measure student growth and mastery in required SLO/SGO teacher evaluation documents
    • Develop assessments that require a variety of levels of cognitive demand presented in Bloom’s Taxonomy and connected through McTighe and Wiggins’ Understanding by Design

Why can’t I take this course without enrolling in the Accelerator?

Because this saves you money. Our individual courses cost the same amount as an Accelerator membership. It just didn’t make sense to keep offering these course a la carte when you could have better support and resources in the Accelerator. If you complete your course and don’t wish to continue your membership, you can always cancel at anytime.

Will the PD hours count for my school/district?

In most cases, yes! We can provide you with a certificate of hours from our organization, based on the contact hours of the course. The majority of schools and districts accept these certificates and count them towards professional development hours.  We always advise you, however, to check with your own institution before taking a course – just to be sure!

None of these courses are offered with graduate credit or are affiliated with an institution of higher education.  However, we do work directly with state departments of education to ensure that these professional development hours meet their requirements and high-levels of learning expectations.  As such, in almost all cases, these courses can be used for continuing education requirements.

Can I use a purchase order? What if I have a group?

How long can I access the course?

This course is self-paced, meaning you can go as quickly or as slowly as you need. We know that while you may have specific intentions for how you’ll go through your course, life can sometimes have other plans. That’s why you can take any course at any time.  You’ll never have to worry about falling behind or getting registered for credit in time.  Work at your own pace in your own way.
